The challenge

Making VDC precision work for non-specialists too

The Nordhavn New Container Terminal is a state-of-the-art facility built for By & Havn, a key component in the expansion of Nordhavn, a dynamic and evolving district in Copenhagen. Contractor Munck Havne og Anlæg employs Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) for the prefabrication of reinforcement cages, an approach that only pays off if everyone on site can act on it.

VDC at scale

Prefabricating reinforcement cages digitally, safely and efficiently, with no room for waste.

Non-specialists on the digital twin

Success requires construction professionals who aren't BIM or VDC specialists to interact with the model too.

Lean has to be provable

Achieving under 0.1% material waste means every decision has to trace back to accurate project data.

With Vitus, everyone on site has easy access to the 3D models and the information we need.

The solution

How the project turns data access into lean practice

Vitus empowers non-BIM specialists to interact with the project's digital twin in an intuitive and effective manner, enabling real-time visualization and monitoring of the construction process across all levels.

1

Vitus as the access layer

Every team member, specialist or not, gets easy access to models and data through Vitus.

The digital twin isn't just for BIM specialists anymore.
2

Real-time visualization on site

Construction progress is visualized and monitored as it happens, directly from the model.

Coordination happens as work unfolds, not after the fact.
3

Lean practice becomes the standard

Informed, accurate decisions at every level reduce material waste to a fraction of a percent.

Less than 0.1% waste, project-wide.

Key learnings

What Nordhavn New Container Terminal shows about lean, data-driven construction

Waste reduction starts with data access

VDC only pays off if the people executing it can see and act on the model too, not just plan from it.

Real-time visibility changes coordination

Monitoring construction as it happens replaces catching problems after the fact.

A benchmark for lean, sustainable infrastructure

The project's approach sets a standard other large-scale terminals and infrastructure builds can measure themselves against.
